strips as well as books. Our village market began carrying the Avon <i>Phantom </i>paperbacks
in the early 1970s and I devoured as many as I could get, beginning with <i>The
Golden Circle</i> by Frank S. Shawn. The reason? I recognized The Ghost Who
Walks from gorgeous Gold Key comic book covers and knew, vaguely, he started as
a newspaper strip. Maybe the Phantom is less than Pure Pulp given his graphic
media origins, but those novels were boyhood nirvana of the pulpish variety,
filled with exotic locations, death-defying action, a globe-hopping masked
adventurer carrying out his multi-generational war on evil, and villains of the
deepest dye.<p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The pulp literature double tap
came soon after with DC Comics’ 1973 take on <i>The Shadow</i>. I was somewhat
familiar with the radio program, but the character was of only passing interest
until Michael Wm. Kaluta’s cover for issue #1 peered menacingly down on me from
the top of the comics spin rack. Shadow quotes quickly peppered my conversations
the same way Green Lantern oaths and Golden Age mystery men mottos had before.
“The weed of crime bears bitter fruit,” indeed. “The Shadow knows!” Know he
might, but he didn’t help much when it came to locating Doc Savage books. I
tried with limited success even after the 1975 Ron Ely film, and once again comics
intervened; there was a Marvel Comics adaptation. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQn6TOozAE-WHv_t0sEEWUbVoif0SWuTX0nab_wheGmY8NpGNFsodbwDc1kSiTNTjT4fGLwNSwaS_8RrvxwfVlhjQvVD-orRjawerfyZ1pZvkgptAovss9Y6Scls5WDiu3FUlIIQDJBRA/s1280/pulprealitypromo8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1280" data-original-width="898" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQn6TOozAE-WHv_t0sEEWUbVoif0SWuTX0nab_wheGmY8NpGNFsodbwDc1kSiTNTjT4fGLwNSwaS_8RrvxwfVlhjQvVD-orRjawerfyZ1pZvkgptAovss9Y6Scls5WDiu3FUlIIQDJBRA/s320/pulprealitypromo8.jpg" /></a></div><br />Roundabout as it was, my pulp
initiation was complete and unwavering. When I heard about ‘Pulp Reality’ #1, a
character I once created for RPG play came to mind. B-Man would be a little bit
superhero yet fully pulp. An unlikely hero, without a vast fortune to rely on.
The sort who enjoys beatnik crowds and music, not Men’s Mind Clouding 101
studies in some mysterious lost city. A former soldier, but not a great one and
largely dismissive of the very notion of being a ‘hero’. Yet, someone who
identifies with cinematic heroes deeply and loves movies. <span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;"><o:p></o:p></span><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Movies <i>are</i> magic, after all, cinemas the stuff dreams
are made of. <i>The Maltese Falcon </i>told us so. In truth, I might be biased. The first film my
mother took me to see on the big screen was <i>The Gnome-Mobile. </i>It’s a
live-action Disney film from 1967 featuring Walter Brennan, a very cool </span>customized
1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II, and a gaggle of wee folk. As amazing as a
gnome-infested special effects extravaganza was for 5-year-old me, even more
mesmerizing was the theater. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">By modern multiplex standards,
our hometown cinema was modest. In comparison with our small country cottage,
the theater was colossal and filled with myriad wonders competing for my
attention. Mysterious echoing foot stomps overhead (from the rowdy kids in the
balcony, but I had no idea). The vastness of a snowy field of screen.
Concession counters brimming with technicolor-packaged treats. The
mouth-watering scent of hot, freshly buttered popcorn. Film and theater cast a
permanent glamour over me that day, bell and book to the candle of a projector
beam when the curtains finally parted. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3k2c_p92lGCI5RCKNExhtwWTFgK1hfMlqJL23VRenEr-_SQkdJPWyuWbLIlmS_jJmot0xU4Moms1f9vOIy-Gdxreb7Di9hYtYWCwOBPM5VeYZgvHqb-Pmih5cvUSDxujpwX01EHIHDns/s792/pulprealitypromo1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="569" data-original-width="792" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3k2c_p92lGCI5RCKNExhtwWTFgK1hfMlqJL23VRenEr-_SQkdJPWyuWbLIlmS_jJmot0xU4Moms1f9vOIy-Gdxreb7Di9hYtYWCwOBPM5VeYZgvHqb-Pmih5cvUSDxujpwX01EHIHDns/s320/pulprealitypromo1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />Over the years, movies joined
books as the two main venues away from a reality often less pleasant and decidedly
more boring than the alternates they offered. Movies can be cheesy, but they
can also be mythic, and there’s no less amount of magic in either. A conjuring
of screenplay, the talents behind the screen and upon it, the cinematographer’s
alchemy. Fold them into the potion, bring the bonfire to medium simmer, and
finish with one final ingredient: The theaters themselves, dream palaces fueled
by nervous anxieties as crowds huddled together for the latest black and white
newsreels from Pearl Harbor. Energized by teenage passion, young couples cuddled
while Frankie and Annette romped across beach blanketed sands, their inhibitions
weakened to a rock-n-roll beat. Primed
by the potent imagination of children gathered for untold Saturday cliffhangers,
their fevered adolescent minds preoccupied all week fathoming how their hero could
ever escape this latest peril. <o:p></o:p><p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Then came the parade of ‘What
if--?’s. What if all that energy, all that emotion, somehow combined with a
location? What if a person tapped into the mystic reservoir and manipulated it?
What if it <i>chose</i> someone as a champion? What if said champion found an
ally close at hand, one with knowledge of the Spirit World? What if I combined
these elements and then had fun working in trivia, making up film ‘history’,
and giving the champion and the seer funny dialogue, all while baleful villains
were made to spit teeth and rue misdeeds?!? What if this was framework for the
first B-Man story?<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"> “Reel One for the B-Man” is the result, and it
really is like many of my all-time favorite films. They’re entertaining because
you feel the fun everyone had making the picture, and it’s contagious. Ted
Davies is the Director of Photography for this story (i.e., the artist), and our
brainstorming sessions over the phone weren’t just enjoyable, they inspired and
helped me polish the final draft. Here’s hoping a bit of our fun creating B-Man
transmits to everyone reading the story. If it does, then in the very finest
Hollywood traditions…can sequels be far behind? Thanks to Ted for his hard
work, and special thanks to Charles F. Millhouse for giving us the opportunity
to share in the excitement of the New Pulp movement. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Thanks for watching, come back
soon, and please be sure to throw away your popcorn boxes and empty soda cups
before exiting the theater. <o:p></o:p></p>

"Prepare to Be Mr. Fye", is an origin story. Perhaps the title gives
this away? But with this tale we meet Jinx Duncan, a young sleuth in a big-city
detective squad. He's smart, conscientious, and, even though he doesn't know it
yet, destined to become something even greater in the annals of crime-fighting:
Mr. Fye!<span style="text-align: justify;"> </span><p></p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align: justify;">If you haven't yet read the
story I don't want to spoil anything for you, so I'll just tell you how the
story came about for me. As a writer, my chief milieu is audio dramas: I've
been writing scripts sporadically for audio drama since 2001, and on a more
steady basis since 2013, when I created my first podcast series, PULP-POURRI
THEATRE. </p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align: justify;">For the first season, I wrote
a dozen pulp-fiction adaptations, and had to read a lot of pulp tales in order
to find ones that were suitable – both lending themselves easily to adaptation,
and presenting a story good enough for my audience to hear. Reading all of
these yarns gave me a terrific education on the pulp style: quick, spare and
brutal, not to mention highly entertaining, on a purely visceral level. The
best ones had some dark humor as well. This helped as I continued with seasons
two through four of my series, not only with more adaptations, but also with
original plays. I did my best to create an atmosphere of "pulpiness",
while at the same time avoiding any "on-the-nose" situations – in
other words, by not obviously saying, "Look, we're being all pulpy, ain't
it great?" </p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align: justify;">Now we come to 2017. I was
invited to bring my acting troupe, The Narada Radio Company, to Pulpfest 2017
in Pittsburgh, to perform one adaptation of a Robert Bloch story, and one
original play. The former was "Return to the Sabbath", a creepy tale
of 1930s Hollywood; the latter was "Prepare to Be Mr. Fye". The short
story that appears in PULP REALITY #1 is in fact a reverse-engineered audio
drama – a 180-degree come about in my usual adaptation method. Whereas I usually
took out third-person narration and substituted music and sound cues, I had to
plant them into my story to keep things flowing. It was quite a challenge, but
I think I did a good job. </p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align: justify;">To return to my promise of
telling you how I wrote the story, I should explain my habit of jotting down
ideas in a little notebook. Some time before I wrote the audio drama about Mr.
Fye, the name "Mr. Fye" came to me out of the blue, so I jotted it down
in said notebook, for later use. When it came time to formulate an idea for a
new play for Pulpfest, I referred to the notebook and saw the name. Then, I
flipped a few pages back and saw the thumbnail outline for a script I'd written
as a vehicle for a "Shadow"-like character. I immediately scratched out
"The Shadow" and scribbled down "Mr. Fye" in its place, and
then began writing in earnest. As with the best stories, the details came to me
as I was writing: Character names, relationships, how a particular character might
speak, the flow of the story, and – most importantly, to me – how our hero
became the hero.</p>
<p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="text-align: justify;">It's true – remember, I'd
originally planned this story as something for Lamont Cranston, so all of that
"power to cloud men's minds" jazz had to go. What you get instead is
a one-hundred- percent-original origin story. Admittedly (and I don't think I'm
spoiling anything by telling you this) Jinx Duncan is still feeling his way by
the end of this first installment; but rest assured, dear reader: you'll find
out more about him <u>and</u> his developing powers at the same time Jinx does,
in future tales of "The Adventures of Mr. Fye"!<o:p></o:p></p>Charles F Millhousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14199706647401282846noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1009126837293722096.post-63026595303538790362020-11-13T11:28:00.001-08:002020-11-13T11:28:50.927-08:00Guest Blogger: Bobby Nash: WHEN TITANS TUSSLE AND WRITERS RAMBLE!<blockquote style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;" type="cite"><div dir="ltr"><div dir="ltr"><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">When I first got into reading comic books as a kid, one of my favorite type of stories would be the team up between two characters. With the blessing of Captain Hawklin’s creator in place, I then faced the most hated problem any writer ever faced.</span><p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">I had to come up with a story.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Not just any story would do, either. Oh, no. This had to be special, remember? Just like Hulk and Thing.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">This had to be a good story.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">That’s always the tricky part.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Writing characters that aren’t yours can be fun, but also a bit nerve-wracking. On the one hand, you want to be respectful to the work that has come before and not be the writer that knocks a character off course. On the other hand, you kind of want to leave your mark as well. It’s a delicate balance between writing the best story you can and not completely screwing up said character.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">I tossed a few plots about, rejecting them for one reason or the other before the one I settled on that eventually became the story appearing in Pulp Reality #1, a fun tale I called “Showdown on Scavenger Quay.” Pro tip: when writing pulp, you can never go wrong with the word <i>showdown</i>. Once I knew what Scavenger Quay was and how things worked there, I put Lance Star in a plane on a solo, undercover mission to infiltrate the island. Why? What was he searching for?</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Then I sat back and watched the story unfold.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">When it comes to writing, my #1 rule is that every story starts with the characters. I am a firm believer that if you know your characters well and you trust them, they will lead you where you need to go. I absolutely believe this. Don’t believe it? Try this test. Take three characters you know well (they don’t have to be yours) and drop them into the same basic plot. Based on how each character reacts to the plot you dropped them into, you will get three different stories. That’s because each character brings something unique to the plot and that determines the story.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Following Lance Star into a story was a pretty easy way to kick off things for me. I know Lance well, having been writing him since 2005, so I had a solid grasp on his character. I knew the good Captain Hawklin from reading some of Charles’ work and I used that as a starting point for the first time these two characters ever met. A few sparks flew. They are both alpha males in a high-flying (pun intended) position. These are men who are used to being in charge. To find themselves working together wasn’t an easy task.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Did they succeed? For that, you’ll have to read the story and decide for yourself. I am pleased with the story and thankfully, Charles gave it a thumbs up as well and I returned his literary toy back to him in the same shape I found him.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">The icing on the cake for this particular story is that the cover art was done by the amazing Clayton Murwin. I’ve known Clayton for years, but this was our first big collaboration and I still remain in awe of the way he captured both Lance Star and Captain Hawklin. I still smile when I see it.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Playing with other creator’s toys is a lot of fun. It can also be nerve-wracking. I have been fortunate in my career to play with some cool characters I did not create like The Green Hornet, Domino Lady, Secret Agent X, Abner Perry, David Innes, Johnny Dollar, The Spider, The Avenger, and more. I’m thrilled to add Captain Hawklin to that list. Who knows, maybe our New Pulp flyboys will get the chance to fly together again.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Thanks for letting me play with your toys, Charles.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Bobby</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Bobby Nash</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: normal; margin: 0in;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">Bethlehem, GA</span></p></div></div></blockquote>Charles F Millhousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14199706647401282846noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1009126837293722096.post-82949679032431986012020-11-11T06:09:00.008-08:002020-11-11T06:13:06.015-08:00A REFLECTION ON INSPIRATION BY KELLIE AUSTIN<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; text-align: justify;"><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 18.6667px;"><br /></span></div><span style="font-size: 14pt;">In our world, there are
many, different kinds of writers. From every corner of the mind’s imagination
and every genre, fact, and fiction, we sit and troll out our deepest desire and
nightmarish worlds that our sleeping eyes play for us when the waking world is
not alive to save us. For others, daily factual terrors from the living, fill
our readers brains that make us feel ashamed, embarrassed, mortified, or
guilty. War, disease, racism, murder and even the inevitable death of a total
stranger within a crowd some thousand miles away.</span><br /></span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-size: 14pt; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQlOJFB64ZQ0ghi6_XZy3VO02nxJfune6xGZU5iyBanBI9BGAxODc8iD-QPnSSaSipRkLzRK8KBRsF4u-TAGbi3RC3Q3-6Uxsj8KLw9imVxlMYnfdwqo09hjEDbNM9l7iFTMUB-x0Ppxw/s2048/20200827084302780-page-001300.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1583" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQlOJFB64ZQ0ghi6_XZy3VO02nxJfune6xGZU5iyBanBI9BGAxODc8iD-QPnSSaSipRkLzRK8KBRsF4u-TAGbi3RC3Q3-6Uxsj8KLw9imVxlMYnfdwqo09hjEDbNM9l7iFTMUB-x0Ppxw/w278-h360/20200827084302780-page-001300.jpg" width="278" /></a></div>The terror of those
monsters and the world’s they inhabit, come from every blackened soulless corner
of the mind’s madness. All those who write have them from time to time. Those
monsters don’t have, to be disfigured to be scary. Monsters can be a situation
or place as well, and can be whatever will have the greatest effect on the
reader of such work. Growing up in a mostly isolated family in a small town in
Kentucky, my imagination would run rampant. Strapping on a homemade old vacuum
and pretending to fly as a skyman or rocket king would be for me a daily
occurrence. My mind would create alien worlds against the backdrop of my
Fathers junk cars and old tin buildings. My Dad’s tools and my Mother’s hair
rollers with expensive silver tape would become my super technological laser
pistol with matching utility belt.<br /></span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%;">I fought against the moon
men invasion of my backyard, I tried to dig tunnels into the earth to find
giant diamonds and evil underground dwellers, went against immense dragons
which were in reality, little green snakes. My imagination had no real
boundaries, and I even took myself to jumping from one large boulder to another,
eyes wide open with glee as the silent invisible space smugglers tried to steal
my asteroid bounty. To those who know me, pulp heroes have always been my
favorite kind of characters, with two fisted, smash’em action against the
backdrop of evil machinations and long bearded, bald, long winded, would be
rulers of the universe.<br /></span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%;">The early days of cable
were limited and mostly boring to a small child like myself. Public
Broadcasting was the place to go. From early adventures of Steed and Peel,
Sapphire and Steel, time travelling doctors, and of course black and white
Republic movie serials. Fifteen minutes of incredible action featuring junior g-men,
green masked avengers, rocket men and so forth.<br /></span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%;">I’ve been asked before
what my other inspirations were when it came to the writing process. I’ve got
many of course, but the three main author’s that have had the most influence in
my creative works are writer’s Robert Heinlein, Hp Lovecraft and the immortal
H.G. Wells. Having suffered from extreme nightmares since childhood, I could
see the twisted, mangled bulbous eyed terrors that those men did and how they
dealt with those things that tortured their souls during the realm of the
daylight and the dark. My favorite novels being “The Puppet Master’s” from
Heinlein, “War of the Worlds”, from Wells and “The Call of Cthulhu” from
Lovecraft. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> <br /></span></span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%;">I could close my eyes and
imagine great demonic beasts rise from the bowels of hell, reaching up and smashing
from high into the air and back onto our unsuspecting world. I could hear the
terrible shrieks from deadly space spores, or fear that my individualism was
under attack from forced conformity. The ideas of dying at twenty, biological and
alien attack, becoming the last woman standing or transforming into a
Frankenstein give me a consistent moment of pause.<br /></span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%;">Inspiration, however, can
come from the most mundane of aspects of our very lives or where we end up. All
genres of adventures, horror, supernatural, pulp, and more can easily fill your
brain. One’s creativity can come from living, observing people and or
buildings, a trip to a strange town, as it is all there to be discovered and made
into a story that will bewilder, scare, or astonish you, and make you think
while rooting for the hero(s) to banish vile doom that awaits, ever lurking to
destroy.<br /></span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%;">This is the reason I’m a
writer. To be able to transport another person into another place or time, challenge
their own personal beliefs, put them right square into the action is a joy for
me. I write to give comfort to the reader, assuring them that when they close the
book for the night, their back home safe and content. Their sip of hot chocolate
or delicious coffee, and the comfort of the warm sheets to drift them into the
netherworld of dreaming of electric sheep.<br /></span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%;">Soon, you the reader will
be able to enter some of my mind filled pulp madness with the first issue of
Stormgate Press’ “Pulp Reality” coming out this December.<br /></span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>My first official published work will be
featured here along with fantastic artist Candice Comelleri in the story called
<b><i>“Ace Anderson and the Curse of Doctor Atomika”</i></b>. It’s a hardcore old-fashioned
two-fisted pulp adventure against the backdrop of the second world war.<br /></span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%;">Ace Anderson, a reclusive
adventurer and expert underwater archaeologist and biologist is recruited by
the British government to investigate and retrieve the downed American sub
named the Thresher somewhere within the Atlantic Ocean. Inside the sunken
vessel is a criminal mastermind being transported to an undisclosed location
for trial for crimes against humanity. Deep within the bowels of the cargo
hold, lies the mythical elemental powder called “Orracalcum”, that once was
used by the inhabitants of the Island Empire of Atlantis.<br /></span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%;">Aided in his quest to
find the Thresher are American agent Finn who hides a deadly secret, Doctor
Mason Moreau and his “son” Java, a “Doberman” leftover from an island massacre,
Ace’s daughter Kenzie, first commander and “Kraken”, the eternal, mythical creature
of constant nightmares from those on the wrong side of its wraith. The Kraken,
a bio-organic Atlantean squid ship merged with manmade technological weaponry
and sentient intelligence, it’s crew and Captain Anderson’s leadership race
against time to stop several Nazi submarines from rescuing their German ally from
the sea floor, and before Doctor Atomika and her undead zombie soldiers can use
the orracalicum to destroy the Allied Forces and bring about German domination
to the entire world forever…<br /></span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%;">I hope you will join me
and the other great talents who have put this anthology together, get
comfortable, have your favorite snack and drink before you with a comfortable
fireplace or snuggly blanket. The choice is yours…Pulp Reality is some really
good stuff and it’s coming all for you. DON’T MISS OUT!<br /></span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%;">Lastly, I’d like to talk
about my upcoming book, coming out in April also from Stormgate Press. I can’t
tell too much as about it currently, but I can say that you will love it! It’s
the same good ole’ smash’em’ in your face kind of story, but with supernatural
elements that will keep you the reader guessing to the very last chapter! There
will be more to come regarding this book, “<b><i>From the Paranormal Case Files
of Bishop Kincaid: The Rembrandt Stratagem” </i></b>I guarantee you will be
back for more.<br /></span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 14pt; line-height: 107%;">For all those who enjoy
reading and those who love and want to write. Inspiration is all around you.
There is no excuse. Get your ideas out for all to enjoy, punch letters on an olden
typewriter, use a pen to paper, crayon to the cardboard, there is always a way
and the will. Embrace your mind and its madness and create. You’re a writer
with the first word to paper. Love to all, this girl is gone like the wind. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></div>

October 2020. What a year this has been. You think with all the free time I had this year I would have done some more posts in this damned blog. I suck haha.</p><p>Having been off most of the year from work because of COVID I spent most of my time writing. I completed two CAPTAIN HAWKLIN books, and besides publishing them, I published the second book of my ORIGIN TRILOGY and... I helped publish an anthology called Tales of the weird and Strange which consisted of nine writers, including myself. I wrote a BIG FOOT type tale and helped format the book together.</p><p>Back in March I put out a call for some of the leading writers in New Pulp to work on another anthology, this one a Pulp Adventure book, called PULP REALITY. I'm happy to say this book is going to knock your socks off. But there will be more of that in the very near future.</p><p>I'm just here to update you all, if you're here and you care, of what I've been up to. Let's see if I can keep this up over the next several weeks and see what happens, and hopefully you'll see I haven't been a total slacker. </p>Charles F Millhousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14199706647401282846noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1009126837293722096.post-67809692877214409612020-01-17T04:15:00.000-08:002020-01-17T04:18:28.815-08:00Guest Blogger: Rick Bradley <div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Very seldom do I connect with someone over social media the way I have with Rick Bradley. Rick is cut from the same jib as most of us indie writers. New to the fold, Rick has grabbed the reins with both hands and held tight. There are many people who claim they want to be a writer, but where they have spun in their tracks afraid to dive in, Rick has taken the plunge. In a very short time he has went from <i>saying</i> he wants to be a writer, to being a being a full-blown author. He's written a short story published in a newly released anthology, to writing his first book, to be released soon, but let's let Rick tell his story of why he chose to join the ranks of the literary insane. In closing, I know Mr. Bradly is going to do amazing things, and I can't wait to see what comes next for him. </span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I’ve had a love of books for as long as I can remember. My sister would read to me every night and the one I requested many times was Charlottes Web. It is still one of my all time favorites. When I was able to read for myself I had my nose in a book often. Well, when I wasn’t making up stories of He-Man and Optimus Prime fighting Mum-Ra with my action figures. Even as a kid I had stories to tell. </span></div>
<blockquote style="background-color: white; color: #222222;" type="cite">
<div dir="ltr">
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In Junior High I got my first Dungeons and Dragons Boxed Set. After learning the rules with the pre-made adventure I set about making my own stories. My elf mage, Alsim, along with a friend’s character, Logan, went on so many adventures. Eventually we got a couple more friends in the group and even expanded to other worlds, Marvel Super Heroes (a still fun TSR RPG game that came out in the 1980’s), Vampire the Masquerade, Robotech, Chill, and more. </span></div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I usually was the Storyteller in the games which I did not mind. I loved crafting worlds and getting reactions from my friends. One of my favorite compliments came while I was running a game of Farscape (if you have not watched the show do it now!) and around that time Firefly had come out. I had not seen any episodes yet, but a friend accused me of ripping it off. After I convinced them I hadn’t watched it yet (don’t worry that has since been remedied many times over), they said I was a Joss Whedon of RPGs. </span></div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
</span>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In High School I took a creative writing class and loved every minute of it. I still have a couple of the stories from then that I’ll be fixing up to publish. In college my English teachers would always wonder what madness my next paper would entail. </span></div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I wanted to write books and have them published, but I had no idea how to do it. Getting a publisher back then was pretty crazy impossible and self publishing was nothing like it is today. I still wrote RPG stories for my friends but that was about it. I had many novels bouncing around in my head, but none on paper. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Flash forward quite a few years to today. I have a 15 year old son who wants to be a graphic designer and animator, a 1 year old daughter who is the apple of my eye and loves music, and a beautiful girlfriend that is so very supportive. My little town has a Comic Con every year, Burg Con. There was a writing seminar and I decided, why not I’ll check it out. I cannot stress how thankful I am that I did. </div>

Those three have been just amazing. If I had a question they answered it or showed me where to find the answer. Brian has a weekly Facebook Live Show called Clever Title Pending on Tuesday nights at 7pm EST and took one show to allow me to ask anything I wanted. For over 2 hours he and his writer/artist friends answered question after question. </span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .25in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">There were three things
Oz Lyman liked more than anything. Burgers, baseball and beer. That’s why
Huffington’s Pub had been his favorite place to go since he discovered it back
in nineteen-twenty-eight. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .25in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">The woosh, woosh, whoosh
of the four ceiling fans worked overtime amid the mixture of chatter, and the Crown
City Captains’ game coming over the radio on Huff’s counter. The pub was bursting
at the seams with baseball fans – men and women alike, though there were more
men than women. Cheers came, when the game announcer exclaimed, <i>“He did it
again, Captains fans... Jimmy, the Dozer, Donovan has his eighth homerun this
season.</i>”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .25in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Oz tipped his frosted mug
toward the radio and took a long draw from the glass. He sat alone in his favorite
corner booth at the back of the establishment and watched the other patrons. Oz
didn’t have many friends besides Steven Hawklin and Hardy Miller. There wasn’t
a lot of time for any others, and Oz had always thought people would only want
to be his friend, if they knew he worked for Captain Hawklin, so he refrained
from telling too many people. With work, and the occasional adventure, Oz had
barely enough time for himself, let alone entertaining more friends.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .25in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">When a plate of food slid
in front of him, Oz focused on the heavenly aroma of Huff’s famous steak burger
and house cut fries. He pulled the plate to him and reached for a bottle of
ketchup.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .25in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">“Oz, look at your hands.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .25in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Oz glanced up at his waitress,
Mindy, and then back at his stained hands. “They’re clean,” he assured her. “Just
stained from working with a new type of oil we are developing at...” he stumbled
over his words and said, “the garage.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .25in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">“Maybe you should develop
something to get your hands clean,” Mindy smiled. “What you need is a woman to
come home to, she...” Now Mindy stumbled over her words. “She could look after
you.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .25in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Oz cleared his throat, and
coyly looked up at Mindy. Mindy was around his age, maybe in her late thirties with
dark brown hair and beautiful rustic eyes. She had lost her husband to cancer back
in nineteen thirty and Hardy had been trying to find the nerve to ask her out for
several years now. But he considered himself not much to look at and kept any
idea of a romantic relationship out of his head.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .25in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Oz was a short man. He’d
been called apish by some, and an imp by others. He had a bulldog face that always
had a scruffy five o’clock shadow. He primarily wore green work pants, a grey
button down and his dirty green ball cap. <i>No woman finds me attractive, </i>he
often told himself. But looking up into Mindy’s eyes, just for an instant he wondered
what it would be like to come home to her. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .25in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Oz had never loved a
woman before, not that he’d given himself a chance to. The last thing any woman
would want would be a dirty little guy like him – he wasn’t a price package,
and he didn’t have much to offer anyone besides a room at a boarding house,
that he didn’t live in. he spent his days and night toiling in Captain Hawklin’s
Silver Bridge apartment, not really a place to offer a potential girlfriend or
wife. Oz choked on the first bite of his burger with that thought and gulped some
beer to force down the hunk of meat lodged in his throat.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .25in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Mindy repeatedly slapped
Oz on the back, grabbed the cloth napkin on the table and wiped his mouth. “You
alright?” she asked with a thin smirk.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .25in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Oz reached for the
napkin, and grazed Mindy’s hand with his. They both stopped and looked at one
another for a couple heartbeats, and then quickly recoiled from one another.
Mindy smiled with her eyes and picked up his half-filled mug. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>“I’ll get you a refill... on the house,” she
said.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .25in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Oz watched Mindy as she
crossed the room and stopped at the bar. She peered back at him demurely and
batted her eyes as she waited for Huff to refill the mug. The crowd cheered
again as the announcer shouted from the radio and drew Oz’s attention back to
the game.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .25in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">The new mug of beer
arrived at the table, he thanked Mindy with a silent stare and took a deep
drink cleansing his palate. Mindy opened her mouth to say something but closed
it when someone from a nearby table shouted, “Waitress!” <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .25in;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Oz watched Mindy for another
moment or two and then went back to his food, his final thought as he bit into
the burger, <i>Who, would want a scruffy guy like me?<o:p></o:p></i></span></div>

<span style="color: black;">This has been a long time coming. After many years of
building my brand, I'm excited to announce the first new author to enter the pages of Stormgate Press. I've known Kellie for nearly
thirty years, she is a fantastic pulp writer, and I know those who enjoy well
thought out characters and adventures in the New Pulp line will dig what she
has to offer.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: black;">Kellie's
first book is "<u><i>The Rembrandt Stratagem: From the Paranormal Cases of
Bishop Kincaid</i></u>" It's a strong character driven, story set in a world not
our own, where the supernatural runs amok and only Bishop stands in their way.
There will be more on that in the weeks to come, but first I'd like for you to
meet Kellie – so without further ado, take it away Kellie.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Like most, I went to study nursing, but as fate cries out, I had to leave that

at the little screen each weekend as I first became enthralled by the old
Republic Movie serials being shown again on that local station. There they
were, zombies from other planets, rocket men fighting moon monsters, champions

You were a grand year for me. Oh sure besides my writing and publishing endeavors, there has been some personal setbacks, but nothing that can't be recovered from. As an author/publisher, I believe you have to learn to keep your personal life separate from that of writer.<br />
<br />
How you present yourself on social media is the key. On my Facebook, Twitter and Instagram I try not to be political, or be too verbal on my views. Oh sure I believe a certain way but the last thing I want to do is try and persuade someone to think the way I do, and in turn I don't want then to inflict their ideas on me. I'm an older guy, my mind is set, and doubt anyone can change it. A good writer friend of mine has often says<br />
, we are showmen, and we need to be actors to our fans, and readers. Which is partially true.<br />
<br />
To know about me, is to read what I write. I pour a lot of me in my stories and that's the best way to know who Charles F. Millhouse is. As we go into the new year it's time for me to refocus and present myself in a way that people will be intrigued enough to pick up my work and discover who I am.<br />
<br />
Come on 2020, bring it on. It's in my blood. Even when I didn't know squat about story structure, POV, or how to show and not tell. I remember sitting on the front porch at my childhood home with my friend Paul, telling our corny superhero stories, not knowing then that I would make a life out of entertaining people with writing. It's been a long hard road, but its been worth every struggle, every disappointment, every letdown and every triumph.<br />
<br />
The year has come full circle and as I look back on 2019 I’m proud at what I have accomplished in my publishing career. Being a full time writer has always been a dream of mine. Making that dream a reality has been hard work. But it’s hard work that has paid off.<br />
<br />
Over the last year I’ve traveled all over, meeting readers like you who have told me they’ve enjoyed my books, and that is totally worth the aforementioned hard work. I've gown my mailing list (which you can expect an end of the year newsletter next week.), and I've published two books, <b><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Captain-Hawklin-Shadow-Charles-Millhouse-ebook/dp/B07MPSFT4X/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=captain+hawklin+and+the+shadow+men&qid=1576674793&sr=8-1" target="_blank">Captain Hawklin and the Shadow Men</a> </b>and <b><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Absolution-Serena-Darkwood-Adventures-Book-ebook/dp/B07PZ9CNR7/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1576674690&sr=8-1" target="_blank">Absolution: A Novel in the Serena Darkwood Adventures</a></b>, this year.<br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
I was cleaning today and came across an old sweater my wife
bought me years and years ago. I hadn’t worn it in quite some time, and it’s a
bit tattered, so I figured why should I keep it, and I tossed it in the garbage
bag with the rest of the trash. After an hour or so, the idea of throwing this unwearable
piece of clothing away didn’t sit well with me. Sure, I wasn’t going to go out
in it, and I might not even wear it around the house – but I couldn’t throw it
away. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
There’s a lot of memories wrapped up in that piece of cloth.
Besides the fact that my wife bought it for me – probably from Christmas past –
I wore it in a picture with my son when he was four or five (he’s twenty-seven
now). When you get older, memories are apart of us, even more then when we are
young. It connects us to different times. Some good, some bad, but nonetheless
a different part of our lives.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Being nostalgic is something someone does when
their kids are older, and moved out, when there are fewer days ahead then behind.
Its like magic, a spell cast on a <i>thing </i>that keeps us grounded. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It amazes me how clothing, whatnots and trinkets become apart
of who you are, and who you were. Sometimes they are all we have of a loved one
no longer with us. In many ways they are time capsules to the past – a moment
in time that lives only in us.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I’m sure I’m not the only person to have this feeling of separation
when we part with something as simple as an old sweater. It’s something that
keeps your memories warm, and close to your heart. Maybe that’s the reason I’ve
kept tools that were my dad’s, and pots and pans that were my mom’s. Its all we
have left of them. In the same regards that old sweater keeps me connected to
my son when he was a boy. Sure, I see him every week, but I see the man, not
the child he was. It’s something unexplainable, but that old piece of cloth... it
keeps me warm. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></div>

Hello everyone, as I
write this blog post I have Brian K Morris’ Facebook show blaring on my phone. It’s
a great resource for writers, artists and creators of all kinds. He has his
fingers on the pulse of the indie industry, like upcoming shows, ideas for
promotions, and who to contact in indie publishing. If you don’t know Brian,
check him out on Facebook. And, even if Brian doesn’t know, maybe someone commenting
during the show will.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
That’s how the indie
community is, helpful, resourceful and there to prop you up when you feel alone.
Most every writer feels like that a lot of the time, I know I do. Even though I
have the love and support of my wife, she really doesn’t know how nerve
wracking it can be when you sit there at the computer trying to pour your soul
out on the screen in front of you. Writers write all the time, fulltime and
part time writers alike. I work a forty hour a week job, but that doesn’t stop
me from creating all the time. Wishing I was home writing. Its frustrating, but
the indie community lifts me up, and it eases the pain between writing times.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Writing is more of a
commitment then most non-writers know. But it’s a love for the written word
that keeps me going. And I love to tell the kind of stories I want to read. Either
it be pulp, space adventure, or supernatural. When I started this incredible
journey of writing in 1999, I had no idea I would get this far. It’s the
readers, and fellow writers who have fueled my drive and to be honest I have run
a little off the track as of late, but I’m narrowing my resolve and refocusing for
the future. I have ideas, and plans that I have let fall to the wayside - but I intend to focus, focus, focus until I reach my goals. (more on that later). </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It's a journey I'm nowhere near ending, and I hope you'll come along with me, I sure would like to have you. So, I hope if you’ve taken time to read this blog post, you’ll leave a
comment below, and tell me how you came to be here, and while you’re here please
take time to look around my site, check out my books, you might find something
here you’ll like.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I plan on making this blog weekly, which has always been my intent, but this time I'm going to make sure it gets done. So untill next week... Thank you.</div>

As a self-published, Indie Author there are only so many hours in the day. If I spent every waking hour doing posts on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, or YouTube promoting, plus going to conventions and book expos I wouldn't have time to write. As a one man show it's a jumbling act and sometimes something has to suffer. But I promise to do better here and over all my accounts.<br />
<br />
It's Fourth of July here in the United States. Time for grilling, bonfires, fireworks and a time to get together with friends and family. As we enter the holiday, let's remember those who have served and are currently serving so we might be free to over eat hotdogs and apple pie. Take time to reflect and be grateful for all that you have, and remember those who may not.<br />
So, take time to reflect, spend time with those you love and remember this time will never come around again. Make the best of it, and just have fun.<br />

Every writer has something that influences them when they start a new project. Absolution is no exception. I’ve always had great love for heroes, who don’t want to be the hero. The protagonist that is out for themselves yet when the chips are down they do the right thing. Serena Darkwood is no exception.<br />
<br />
In a lot of ways, Serena is Han Solo, a smuggler, and scoundrel. But if there is anyone that Serena Darkwood reflects the most, it’s Malcom Reynolds of “Firefly”. That series is a huge influence on Absolution. Like Mal, Serena wants to be free, with space under her feet and coin in her pocket.<br />
<br />
If you enjoy a fast paced sci-fi story, with intrigue and a dash of humor, then Absolution is the novel you’ve been waiting for. I enjoyed putting Serena through her paces playing with her emotions and building her character into something I believe you’ll want to read.<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvISrfsbEy0nABIhGcPJ93By0BtAAPxiO4uoFO1hxoYQD1-yvJB6Wka7o3AGAdp-KYuFe1yK4IsGnAETBhw27JpV2v0_jVbhnnGFD4H-sMMZL0CPkDGv-t8hBZRj37lET-VUsmG-MLnsI/s1600/2A2AD942-8E25-4D17-B702-F42A5777D612.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="444" data-original-width="1600" height="88" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvISrfsbEy0nABIhGcPJ93By0BtAAPxiO4uoFO1hxoYQD1-yvJB6Wka7o3AGAdp-KYuFe1yK4IsGnAETBhw27JpV2v0_jVbhnnGFD4H-sMMZL0CPkDGv-t8hBZRj37lET-VUsmG-MLnsI/s320/2A2AD942-8E25-4D17-B702-F42A5777D612.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I wrote a five book series a few years ago, called Talon’s Epic, about an 18th century British navy officer abducted by aliens. When I wrote that series I was bent on making it totally alien, changing phrases, terms and giving each alien a parasite that infected their bodies and helped them communicate with one another.<br />
<br />
With “Absolution” A Novel in the Serena Darkwood Adventures, I grounded the story, time is calculated in Earth terms (even though our little planet has nothing to do with the story, and is not even mentioned) money is used a lot like we use it, paid in old galactic coin, and…. I think you see where I’m going with this. I didn’t want the reader to be bogged down in unfamiliar terms that would confuse them and take away from the enjoyment of the story, which I think is outstanding, by the way.<br />
<br />
I like to think Absolution is a popcorn story, something you can settle in with and enjoy from each sentence, to each page and to each chapter. And when you’re finished with it, you’ll want more of smuggler Serena Darkwood, because there is a lot more story to tell.<br />
<br />
Absolution is a self-contained story, with a beginning, middle and end without a cliffhanger wanting you to wait for the next book. Of course there are mysteries unresolved, because like I said its an ongoing story, that will leave you wanting more. If you like action, plot twists, and pure space adventure stories, then I know you’ll enjoy this book.<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCQRluvpi0hiCu9WtS23p_bY4MshiPLrXyQurn38rEWAPEfqTODND0xadLsO9YnfXjECzGYRuUe5f0qJwQcFtXxLzbrYinpBW3cTugZKHH8TN0WkDpLiRHzG0oxriC8ahsbWVHedUl1sc/s1600/018B7D3B-A3B6-468E-96B9-8D1F4B0A9ADD.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCQRluvpi0hiCu9WtS23p_bY4MshiPLrXyQurn38rEWAPEfqTODND0xadLsO9YnfXjECzGYRuUe5f0qJwQcFtXxLzbrYinpBW3cTugZKHH8TN0WkDpLiRHzG0oxriC8ahsbWVHedUl1sc/s320/018B7D3B-A3B6-468E-96B9-8D1F4B0A9ADD.jpeg" width="180" /></a></div>
I’ve always wanted to create and write a TV series. Fill it with incredible characters, interesting locations and wild story plots. Most people will never get the chance to be the producer of a series, but writing a novel series, you can let your imagination go wild. And that’s what I’ve set out to do.<br />
<br />
Everything I’ve written over the last twenty years has led me to Serena Darkwood. Absolution is the culmination of many years hard work, honing my skills not only as a writer, but as a story teller, the creator of worlds and magnificent characters.<br />
<br />
Serena Darkwood is a strong, complex, determined woman who is feared and desired for her many talents. She is a loner, a smuggler and known not to be trifled with. She lives by a simple code, take the job, don’t ask questions and get paid. But remaining neutral isn’t one of Serena’s best attributes. One of her greatest flaws, and strengths is that she cares. She’s not a hired gun, but she’s handy with her old galactic equalizer – a weapon that means a great deal to her, and she is not afraid to kill if it’s for the right reason.<br />

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black; margin: 0px;">It’s located inside the Monroe Mercantile which is a large
antique shop. Even though they rent a small space, they treat their small area
like a big box book store, with special events catering to the world of
independent writers and publishers. Currently they have over thirty writers
they cater to. Their system is simple. The writer pays a one-year fee, buying
shelf space, plus a small additional few for every other title. When a copy of
your book sells, you get 80% of the sell.</span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: black; margin: 0px;">If you’re like me, an independent author, you know how hard
it can be to get your books on the shelf in a book store. Oh, sure you can find
a local place or two to put them on the shelf on consignment and if you’re
lucky you can get a book signing or something to help promote your book. But
not all authors have that luxury. Some have to be content selling their books
on line or sitting up at shows.</span></div>
<div style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: transparent; color: black; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: 16px; font-variant: normal; letter-spacing: normal; margin: 0px; orphans: 2; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">

<span style="color: black; margin: 0px;">But what if I told you about this place in Monroe, Georgia
called The Southern Pen Bookshop. It’s not a bookstore in the traditional sense,
but it caters to ALL INDEPENDENTLY written books. Would you be interested?</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in; text-align: justify;">

<span style="color: black; margin: 0px;"><span style="color: black; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px;">For one year, your book(s) are on the shelf for all to see.
It’s the same process that the major publishing houses do, renting space for
their writers in larger booksellers. The Southern Pen also have author
spotlights, focusing on a different writer a month. They have signings, and
even a writer’s conference. I have not been to the bookstore, but since I have
a brother that lives in Georgia, I think I will be paying a visit soon. I’m
providing a link to their website so you can have a look and decide if this
might be something, you’re interested in. I know I am.</span></span></div>

Most of you know that I've been a indie author since 1999, that I make guest appearances all over the Midwest, and that I have been publishing science fiction/new pulp adventures with some degree of success. But what some of you might not have known is there is another Millhouse who is an author in her own right, in the realm of Fantasy Romance. I'm happy to call Paula Millhouse my sister-in-law. Over the last several years she has made her mark, writing several well-received novels and short stories.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

StormGate Press, Charles! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I think what you’re doing for the writing community by
interviewing writers on your site is awesome.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I’m Paula Millhouse (and yes, Charles and I are related – I
married his big brother Carl). It’s been fun to discover we both have a
penchant for writing. Makes for some great conversation at family reunions.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify;">
I’ll be talking about my work in this post. My tag-line is <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Writing stories where fantasy, romance, and
suspense collide.</i> I know, I know, everyone says “pick a lane” or “write in one
genre”, but that doesn’t work for me. And the great thing about being an Indie,
or a cross-breed, is I don’t have to. I’m both published with traditional
publishers, and self-published. I like having options.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I started writing when I was thirteen. My writing buddies
and I used to exchange folders with our stories at class change, and guess what
I did while class was going on – yep, I read their updates and left glowing
critiques. (That <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">might</i> explain those
bad grades in Algebra…)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin: 0px; text-align: justify;">

<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify;">
My first series, <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">THE
KINGDOM OF CHALVAREN ROMANCES</i>, was picked up by a small press in 2013. I
love dragons. Don’t you? </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify;">
It’s a two-book series starting with <span style="margin: 0px;"><a href="http://bit.ly/2S5uEeBDRAGONSTONE"><span style="color: #0563c1; font-family: "calibri";">DRAGONSTONE</span></a></span>,
which leads to <span style="margin: 0px;"><a href="http://bit.ly/2CRyzSjCHALVAREN"><span style="color: #0563c1; font-family: "calibri";">CHALVAREN
RISING</span></a></span>. The have the best elements of fantasy, and romance woven
together. Dragons, elves, and an alternate universe? Add in a hot romance
between the main characters and what could be better? <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Fun fact:</i> Charles helped me name the kingdom.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify;">
Then I wrote <span style="margin: 0px;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><a href="http://bit.ly/2SbI6xpSAVANNAHGIRL"><span style="color: #0563c1; font-family: "calibri";">SAVANNAH GIRL’S THREE

fantasy romance set in my hometown at Saint Patrick’s Day – our national
holiday<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">. </i>This book comes equipped
with a Leprechaun hero, fairy royalty, and a heroine who owns an Irish bar down
on River Street.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin: 0px; text-align: justify;">

<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify;">
Then I wrote <span style="margin: 0px;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><a href="http://bit.ly/2sKBurAMARMALADE"><span style="color: #0563c1; font-family: "calibri";">MARMALADE’S FIRST CHRISTMAS</span></a></i></span><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">.</i> It’s my one contemporary work
featuring a hero who rescues a kitten, a heroine who’s a veterinarian, and
everything I love most about Christmas.</div>

agent to a traditional publisher. That was a wonderful experience because I got
to see inside what happens to a manuscript when it sells. I received an advance
and had the opportunity to work with a thirty-year veteran editor, which was an
incredible experience.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

When Evie Longfellow
accepts the blind date from hell everything sane about her life changes.

<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px; text-align: justify;">
I grew up when Steven Spielberg
and George Lucas were releasing their early films. In interviews, especially
while promoting Indiana Jones, they kept referencing classic movies. I soon
wanted to know everything there was to know about classic movies. Thanks to VHS
tapes, which were new at the time, I watched a lot of old movies when I was
still very young.</div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px; text-align: justify;">
The Jack Hunter adventures are a
series of stories set in the 1930s and 1940s. Whether Shanghai, Cairo, or
wherever, a lot of research goes into the settings. There are three stories so
far (a fourth is completed), and my intention is to show some flexibility with
the tone. In other words, some will be comedic, some may be more romantic,
others may have elements of espionage, etc.<span style="margin: 0px;">
</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px; text-align: justify;">
Solstice Publishing has made them
available. If you purchase <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Elephants
of Shanghai</i> you get the first two stories in one book. The latest is <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The Chameleon Thief of Cairo</i>. I’ve been
extremely fortunate with cover artists. Paul Shipper illustrated the first two,
and Elizabeth Yoo illustrated the recent one. </div>

<br />
<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; margin: 0px;">Wang’s
eyes swung to the side, while every other inch of him remained motionless. “A
map of supply routes will be delivered to your room tonight,” he continued. “I
have secured a boat to take you to Hong Kong. It can be ready whenever you
like—”</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; margin: 0px;">“Tomorrow
morning,” Jack eagerly stated.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; margin: 0px;">Soaring
to a feverish intensity, the crowd shouted and whistled as a strikingly
beautiful Chinese woman stepped across the stage to a microphone that looked to
be pleading for her touch. She wore a tight silk dress with a high-rising slit,
scandalously exposing a thigh. A stiff upturned collar wrapped snugly around
her neck. When she began to sing, the room was hers, as if she had cast a
spell.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; margin: 0px;">Noticing
the overexcited look on Johnny’s face, Wang said, “They call her Summer
Sometimes. She has a weakness for underworld figures.”</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; margin: 0px;">Thunderstruck
by good fortune, Johnny caught Jack’s eye. He winked. He fidgeted and twitched.
He pulled on his ears and nose, tugged on his ill-fitted suit, and mimed rowing
a boat toward the stage.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; margin: 0px;">Explaining
to Wang, Jack said, “It’s his favorite song.”</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; margin: 0px;">Melting
at the sight of the singer, Johnny chewed on his hands. The singer’s movements
were sensual, teasing, and deliberate. It wasn’t until the second chorus that
she slowly lifted her thigh out in the open, parting her silk dress like a
curtain and electrifying the crowd with a touch of eroticism.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQMSWwMSqsF-Y8hZhPToU6PJzRdwQnomPWSbDtwmtpuIl48Mpb64RFovLQaGQRlwEKq9Rw8Ggwxx2EOgc0052ukb0xph91FFsxq_nGpGqZxsanZ5W6T_2LJpN15qLuKp-3maE3LyYGvqo/s1600/CTOC-Cover+Bleed.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; margin: 0px;">Soon
the tune closed. Summer Sometimes bowed to rapturous applause. Demurely, she
crossed the stage, taking her leave. Diamonds glistened with graceful
movements. She raised a slender hand, acknowledging the demand for more, but
left without hesitation, offering a glimpse of selfishness when it came to her
seductive charms.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; margin: 0px;">Johnny
continued with his wild gyrations, slapping his hands ferociously. “Oh, boy!
Oh, boy! Get a load’a that doll!” He whistled sharply, as loudly as he could.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; margin: 0px;">The
band continued playing. <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Stardust</i>
enchanted the crowd even absent its lyrics.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; margin: 0px;">All
eyes remained on the stunning vocalist as—</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; margin: 0px;">She
walked to Jack’s table.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; margin: 0px;">Wang
was the first to rise and greet her. Extending a hand, he offered his
compliments. “A delightful performance, Miss Sometimes.”</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; margin: 0px;">Even
as she presented her hand to Wang, her eyes were solely on Jack. Her exquisite
perfection, all the more so up close, was panic-inducing. She smiled a small
smile. Her cheeks were bright wonders of unblemished softness.</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; margin: 0px;">Feeling
a rush to his head, Jack said, “I’m Jack.”</span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; margin: 0px;">Summer
shook his hand. “I know.”</span></div>

<span style="margin: 0px;"><span style="margin: 0px;">Chetan
Livrés & Café sat on a large avenue, flanked by Moorish arcades. Outside,
an elderly merchant sold postcard-size paintings of ancient Egyptian life. The
bookstore’s neighbors sold wristwatches, pocket-watches, and modern European
clothes. A man wearing a linen suit flicked a cigarette to the feet of the
merchant before entering. Jack and Clancy followed, finding a charming mess of
books overwhelming shelves, climbing walls, and sitting scattered in stacks all
over the floor like buildings in a miniature city. They moved carefully through
the disorderly maze toward the back where a courtyard allowed patrons to socialize.
Coffee and food items were served.</span></span></div>

<span style="margin: 0px;"><span style="margin: 0px;">“Then

<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="margin: 0px;"><span style="margin: 0px;">Before
the next hour passed, Jack and Clancy came to realize that not a single member
of the Chetan staff spoke English. The coffee, however, was wonderful.
According to a menu at each table, the coffee beans were imported from southern
Arabia, ground locally, and blended with cardamom. They also ate from a plate
of delicious sweet dates filled with goat cheese. There weren’t many of them,
and so they discussed what else they might try. They settled on sweet cakes
covered with coconut syrup. A second round of coffee came too.</span></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="margin: 0px;"><span style="margin: 0px;">Jack’s
attention was eventually drawn to a man, seated alone and holding a folded
newspaper. The man kept darting eyes at them. The man’s suit was rumpled, as
though not cleaned in weeks. His stubble was more than a day old. When he noticed
Jack watching, he raised his coffee and smiled. Jack returned the stranger’s
greeting with a smile of his own.</span></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="margin: 0px;"><span style="margin: 0px;">“You
are Americans?” he asked in Arabic-accented English.</span></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="margin: 0px;"><span style="margin: 0px;">Jack
nodded, offered their first names, and then invited the man to their table. “A
great pleasure to meet you,” he added. “Your name is …?”</span></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="margin: 0px;"><span style="margin: 0px;">“I
am Kalem. You search for something other than books?”</span></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="margin: 0px;"><span style="margin: 0px;">The
silk tassel on his tarboosh swayed as he sat, and all his words smelled of
decayed teeth. He had a peculiar way of speaking. He shoved words from his
mouth without lip movement, and as he did so, his bulging eyes swept the room
with unrestrained suspicion.</span></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="margin: 0px;"><span style="margin: 0px;">“What
makes you ask?” Jack replied.</span></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="margin: 0px;"><span style="margin: 0px;">“I
sorry. I speak foolishly. Do not mind me. You are businessmen?”</span></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="margin: 0px;"><span style="margin: 0px;">“We
could be open to business. We’d need someone to make introductions.”</span></span></div>
<br />
<div style="margin: 0px 0px 13.33px; text-align: justify; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="margin: 0px;"><span style="margin: 0px;">“I
do not know anyone, not anyone with money.” Kalem flattened his palms on the
table, leaned in, and spoke in a conspiratorial tone. “Please, do not mistake
me. I am not one of the disgruntled who speaks of liberating us from the
wealthy English infidels. I am just a simple one, a happy-to-get-along
Egyptian.” He straightened his back again and nodded, pleased with the
definition he offered of himself.</span></span><span style="margin: 0px;"><span style="margin: 0px;"><br /></span></span></div>

Hey, I have som<span style="text-align: center;">e great news. The date has been set for the sixth book in my Captain Hawklin Adventure series. “The Shadow Men” will be released on February 6th 2019 (which happens to be my birthday) </span>Here is the back cover blurb and the cover by Damian Aviles.<br />
<br />
July 1937<br />
When Captain Steven Hawklin is attacked by a warplane over Southern California he is thrown into the secrecy and intrigue of the Shadow Men, an ultra-classified branch of the British government bent on keeping the Empire safe at all costs. It seems one of their agents has gone rogue and is out to kill Captain Hawklin.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile at the behest of Professor Lucas Gray, Oscar “Oz” Lyman arrives in the mountains of Montana, to investigate the mysterious appearance of an Indian God who has invoked a local Blackfoot Tribe into committing acts of violence, preventing the construction of a new ski resort. Suspicious, Oz leads an expedition into the mountains to find the real reason behind the strange phenomenon.<br />
<br />
Approached by agents of the Shadow Men, Steven learns the motive of the person out to kill him, understanding the past is never forgotten, he agrees to help track down the wayward agent, in a race against time to prevent the death of his trusted friend, Hardy Miller, who becomes entangled in the villainous plan. Traveling to Germany, Steven is given one chance to rescue his friend in a do-or-die aerial battle that will prove once and for all, the true master of the air.<br />
<br />
Captain Hawklin and the Shadow Men, is a throwback of a bygone age of pulp adventure stories. Filled with spies and mythological gods. Nazis, cliffhangers and action in the tradition of Doc Savage and Commander Cody.Charles F Millhousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14199706647401282846noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1009126837293722096.post-11860266955215112152018-11-14T11:45:00.001-08:002018-11-14T11:45:46.963-08:00My Thoughts of Stan Lee<div style="color: #454545; font-family: ".SF UI Text"; font-size: 17px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-family: ".SFUIText"; font-size: 17pt;">Stan Lee left this universe on November 12, 2018 and as I write those words, I can’t wrap my mind around it.</span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: ".SF UI Text"; font-size: 17px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 20.3px;">
<span style="font-family: ".SFUIText"; font-size: 17pt;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: ".SF UI Text"; font-size: 17px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-family: ".SFUIText"; font-size: 17pt;">I grew up with many influences, my parents, an older brother and even though they taught me right from wrong, Stan Lee taught me to believe. I found comics when I was about eight years old. I immediately fell in love with them. I was hooked on Spider-Man (what kid wasn’t?) and although it took be a few years to understand who these creators were, Stan Lee was always there. He didn’t talk down to kids, be treated us as equals and that’s what drew me to Marvel more than any other company. Stan Lee was larger than life. His ideas were something I’ve emulated once I decided that writing was something I wanted to do for a living. It was through those early Avenger stories that I learned how to pace a story, how to give the reader just enough to get them hooked. That’s what Marvel did back in the day, and Stan was a master of it. It was his tireless efforts and his unwilling to compromise that drove his stories in the directions they went. Though there have been others writers after Stan stepped away from the story telling, none of them was Mr. Lee. He took a fledgling company and by the mid 1970’s made it a household name.</span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: ".SF UI Text"; font-size: 17px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 20.3px;">
<span style="font-family: ".SFUIText"; font-size: 17pt;"></span><br /></div>
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: ".SF UI Text"; font-size: 17px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-family: ".SFUIText"; font-size: 17pt;">I can’t imagine a world where there is no Stan Lee. Where there will be no more cameos in a Marvel Movie, where we won’t see him on the red carpet, or where we won’t meet him at a convention. I actually physically bumped into him once at a con as we passed through a door together. I tapped him on his shoulder and said “Excuse me Stan.” His reply was something mumbled because I think it took him off guard. But in my mind I can hear him say, “That’s alright True Believer.” No I can’t imagine a world without Stan Lee, or Jack Kirby or Steve Ditko. Sadly the greats are leaving us. But they left behind tons and tons of stories and art that will live on forever.</span></div>
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: ".SF UI Text"; font-size: 17px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 20.3px;">

<br />
<div style="color: #454545; font-family: ".SF UI Text"; font-size: 17px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-family: ".SFUIText"; font-size: 17pt;">Thank you Stan... Excelsior!!</span></div>
